Setting The Scene

Introduction and acknowledgements:

Young people should not have to remain silent or anonymous about the effects alcohol has on them or those close to them.  This resource seeks to give young people an opportunity to review their individual positions, identify appropriate support options, consider their own personal values and where relevant, adopt relevant protective strategies which enhances their safe progression into adulthood.

Adolescents Anonymous provides dramatic and moving portrayals of the effects alcohol have on the lives of three young people.  The thought provoking and realistic stories address different aspects of alcohol use; they have been designed as a flexible alcohol education resource within an integrated PHSCE education package which aligns with the Kirklees alcohol strategy targets of:

  1. Reducing alcohol related health problems across the local population
  2. Reducing alcohol related anti-social behavior and crime
  3. Raising awareness of and promoting safe levels of alcohol consumption amongst residents, in particular young people.

The key objectives of Adolescents Anonymous are to:

  1. Enhance knowledge and understanding about alcohol
  2. Show the consequences of alcohol misuse on individuals, families, relationships and the community
  3. Identify and reduce some of the risks associated with alcohol use
  4. Clarify, challenge (and possibly change) attitudes towards alcohol
  5. Promote a ‘safer’ drinking message
  6. Highlight the potentially addictive nature of alcohol
  7. Know how and where to find help and support for any problems associated with alcohol
  8. Build appropriate resistance skills which may discourage them from drinking at an early age

The DVD and lesson plans are designed to be used with years 7, 8 and 9.  However a teacher may decide to use the entire resource with one year group.  In this case lesson plans will need to be adapted accordingly.  The content of the DVD is suitable for use with students beyond year 9 (and with parent and carers).

The DVD resource has been developed under the direction of Val Flintoff, School Improvement Consultant PSHCE (Drugs) and Alan Laurie, Learning and Workforce Development Manager, Kirklees Safer Communites Partnership and is provided in an easy to use format, supported by lesson plans which hopefully inform, stimulate discussion,  explore attitudes and encourage young people to make their own choices around the use of alcohol.

Included with the package is a DVD, a resource CD and this paper copy.

  1. DVD – comprising of three different stories which can be selected from a scene menu list being playable on a PC or DVD.
  2. Resource CD – playable on a PC containing an electronic version of thisteacher pack with its contents being compatible with PowerPoint and Adobe formats.  The CD includes all supportive task sheets for classroom delivery and can be personalised or adapted to meet specific learning group requirements.  Many of the activities provide opportunities to be adapted for use with interactive boards.
  3. A ring binder which includes relevant guidance, suggested activities and supportive resources.  Whilst these are provided as best practice examples, teachers are encouraged to explore the potential of adapting the content to meet the needs of their students.

Whilst teachers are encouraged to personalise and adapt the lesson plans for their school please note that both discs and accompanying lesson plans are copyright protected, therefore copies must not be made of either discs or the resource pack.  If copies are made, this would constitute copyright theft which is an offence.  If you require additional copies please contact Val Flintoff, School Improvement Consultant PSHCE (Drugs) on 01484 225830.

Many messages communicated in the DVD may need unpacking with students and with this in mind the accompanying DVD is provided together with supportive teaching resources and as such should not be delivered in isolation from these or adapted activities.   Without adequate planning and preparation there is a real danger that misunderstandings or isolation could occur.  Where this DVD is used inappropriately your organisation will need to take responsibility for this.

With this in mind it is essential that teachers feel confident with the DVD content and the associated support material, it is therefore recommended that teachers will have:

  • Watched all three stories in the DVD prior to using them in the classroom
  • Have reviewed and amended the lesson plans to meet their learning groups
  • Possess sufficient understanding around alcohol issues in order to deliver the lessons
  • Kirklees also provides a PSHCE education training DVD which will assist those teachers who want to develop their classroom delivery skills and techniques in delivering the Adolescents Anonymous resource
