Joe's Story

The Bottle Spins

The third chapter brings the story full circle featuring Joe as himself (now a young adult).

Joe and Gemma are going out with each other.  Unable to cope with her parents continued drinking, she has moved out of home and now lives with a friend.

Joe describes what has happened to him since leaving school: he has failed his exams, given up on college, lost several jobs and crashed his Dad’s car after drinking alcohol.  But he appears happy with life, drinking heavily and enjoying his role as the ‘party boy’.  He spends most of his time drinking with his friend Ash.

Ash and Joe organise a school reunion party. During the night, everyone is drinking alcohol, but Joe and Ash drink heavily and become very drunk.  They begin to realise that their friends have moved on to university or into good jobs.  They own mobile phones and cars that Joe and Ash could never afford to buy.

After playing a game of Spin the Bottle, Ash and Joe become increasingly loud and some of the group start to look embarrassed and annoyed by the drunken behaviour.  Some make comments about Joe’s drunken antics.

Gemma argues with Joe over his drunken state as she feels alcohol has become more important to him than anything else.  When Ash involves himself in their disagreement, an argument ends with Gemma being hurt by a bottle.

Joe’s life starts to fall apart.  Gemma wants to end the relationship, his Mum is insisting that he leaves home and he has no work and little money.  The film ends with Joe coming to realise he has some difficult decisions to make about his future alcohol use.
